In today’s Gospel we hear some very
familiar words: Luke’s rendition of the
Beatitudes. Though in a shorter form than
what we hear in Matthew’s Gospel, Luke
includes what happens when we do not
live out the Beatitudes: Woe to us!
Upon reading them again, I pondered which I most
identify with personally. I invite you to do the same.
Read the Beatitudes and open yourself to entering
into them. Which is speaking to you this day? Which
are you most touched by? Or which provokes a
question in you? Take time to sit with that Beatitude
and pray that God might speak to you in the silence.
Blessed are you who are poor, for yours is the
kingdom of God.
Blessed are you who are hungry now, for you will
Blessed are you who weep now, for you will
Blessed are you when people hate you, and when
they exclude you, revile you and defame you on
account of the Son of Man.
Rejoice and leap for joy on that day! For your
reward will be great in heaven.
And woe to all who believe they have it all on this
earth. They may very well miss the opportunity to
know the reward of heaven and eternal life with

who realize that all that we need
to be happy with God one day in
heaven and to know that the glory
of living in His presence, is not
found here in this life alone. But our
lives, lived in faith as Christians, are
a journey that prepares us for the
reward of eternity. True joy is
found in heaven.
The Beatitudes provide us an opportunity to take
inventory of the way we are living and to check our
attitudes, our love and our concern for our neighbors
and ourselves. Given to us directly from Jesus, the
Beatitudes are a GIFT. And by them we are indeed
