Comfort the Sorrowful Last month the BeFrienders group here at our parish had the pleasure of a presentation by Roxann Storms, licensed Social Worker who led a discussion of Secondary Losses. She explained that we all deal with grief throughout our lives in many ways, not only through the loss of a loved one. She shared what she called a formula that applies to everyone: Change=Loss=Grief She explained that any and all changes that we experience in life include a loss of something and in that loss, grief – a grieving about how things were before the change. It is important to note that we experience loss of some sort, nearly every day and perhaps many times within a day. It could be as simple as enjoying a beautiful sunrise only to watch it pass away before your eyes. It changed, the colors faded or the clouds moved in, you lost sight of the beauty and you may have thought, how sad, that was so beautiful, I wish it could have lasted longer. We, in a sense, grieve its passing. And then of course there are profound and devastating losses the we experience; the loss of good health, an accident that changes the course of our lives, the loss of a job, a financial loss, a divorce, the loss of our youth, the loss of a treasured friendship or the death of a loved one. Much has changed, we feel the gravity of the loss; we grieve. I would like to offer to all who are grieving an opportunity to gather with others who are experiencing loss that you might find comfort and support. It may be a recent loss, it may be a loss not dealt with for years, and you may feel you are ready to seek support and understanding. The St. Cloud area offers a number of Grief Support Groups. I encourage anyone who feels the need to explore how these organizations and groups might assist you in your grief journey to check them out. You will know when you are ready.
