The Feast of the Holy Family
December 29, 2018
This week our Church takes time to honor and highlight the role of the Holy Family; Jesus, Mary and Joseph. They stand as a model for all relationships; of love and kindness, honoring one another and sharing their very lives as part of God’s plan to save all people.
The picture is precious; a new born child being held by his mother and the mother being embraced and surrounded by the love of her husband. All seems perfect. But this is just the beginning of their journey to bring their Son, Jesus Christ into the world.
We can only imagine that this young couple was excited and filled with love for their child and they, like any new parent, must have been in awe and at the same time concerned about how they would care for this precious gift. How will we teach him all he needs to know to survive in a world that is not always kind and loving? How will we plan for his future? Will we be able to provide for all of his needs and will we be able to keep him safe? Will he be happy? And what will he grow to be in this life? We are not unlike the Holy Family with all the joy of new birth and all the concerns of new parents. We know like they, that our child will not be a child forever. Time passes and they grow, hopefully becoming all that God intended they be. We know from our personal experience or the experience of others that raising a child is not easy and the deep desire to keep them safe and assist them to grow in love and kindness is not bound by age, for a parent is a parent forever.
May Mary and Joseph provide for us a model of love that surpasses all generations, one brought to us by the child Mary gave birth to on that fateful night. May we, like them, depend on God to show us the way to loving our families, our friends, even the stranger among us.
May we see in all people what Mary and Joseph saw as they gazed at their child; the face of God. The face of God in an infant who, like our own children, will grow to live life filled with joy and peace as well as with pain and hardship and suffering.
Let us, with grateful hearts, express our love to the Holy Family for all they have taught us. And let us follow in the footsteps of their Son in offering our gifts to the world, that all might know true joy. Then one day, united in God’s love, we too will gaze into the eyes of their precious Son, Our Lord Jesus Christ.
