“The Lord upholds my life “ The last line of our responsorial psalm today is this: Behold, God is my helper; the Lord sustains my life. Freely I will offer you sacrifice. I will praise your name O Lord, for its goodness. Even as I pen this article, I am being blessed with the opportunity to relax at a cabin up North and as they say at McDonald’s “I’m lovin’ it!” I’m all alone in this woodsy wonderland and am able to gather my thoughts with some clarity and relative ease. This month, after 35 years in nursing home ministry, I am retiring. Now I announce this event with some hesitation because I have “retired” three times in the past. These days I’m finding that most of the residents are not much older than I am. Some are a number of years younger! And so I hope and pray that I have run a good race and will come to the finish line with at least a few souls cheering me on.
I thank my peers, the deacon community, my pastors, my mentors, and Saint Stephen, the first deacon (and also the first martyr by the way!) for helping me to participate in a ministry that is so fulfilling and precious. I have loved the older folks ……..and now I am one!
My utmost thanks go to my wife and my family of 3 children, 5 grandkids, and 2 greats. They have been my rock of support all along the way. I thank God for these years for He has been so good to me as I continue to learn new wonders of His love each and every day. Maybe He isn’t finished with me yet?
Autumn blessings to all of you,
He Would Love First!
