Notes from Deacon Steve
August 18, 2018
Where has Deacon Steve been lately? I’ve had this question asked of me by several people over the past few weeks because I haven’t been at St. Francis much (relatively speaking!) over the last few months. In fact, this weekend is the first time I’ve preached since the middle of May. I even had an individual ask me, “Are you still a deacon or did you quit?” Rest assured that I am still a deacon and I’m still in full, active ministry. Like many of you, I have had the opportunity to enjoy some wonderful vacations and family time this year. After a few very busy and hectic summers over the past few years, I’ve had the opportunity to focus a bit on work/life balance this year.
In July, my wife, Donna, and I had the opportunity to take a much needed vacation to the Pacific Northwest which occurred over my regularly scheduled preaching weekend. We had the opportunity to visit the Seattle, Washington, area then travel to Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, area. It was fantastic! The entire time we were there the weather was in the mid to upper 70’s, no humidity, no rain, and no mosquitoes! In Seattle we visited the usual tourist sites such as the Space Needle, the original Starbucks and took a sightseeing cruise. Of course we went to Pike Place Market and watched them
Vancouver was incredible as well. What a beautiful city! Besides enjoying the many sites of the city, we took a ferry to Victoria and Bouchard Gardens on Vancouver Island. Traveling between Seattle and Vancouver via Amtrak was a great way to reach our destination while enjoying the sights along the way. If you haven’t been to this area, we highly recommend it! Although I have been away from the parish enjoying time with family and seeing new sights, you have not been far away from my mind. I keep all of you in my thoughts and prayers whether I’m in the parish or not and I thank God regularly for being part of such a vibrant and welcoming community. I truly feel blessed to be able to exercise my ministry in such a special parish.
It’s great to be back this weekend and I feel privileged to preach the Word of God at all of the Masses this weekend. My faith is strengthened whenever I have the opportunity to worship and received the Eucharist with you. The Body of Christ nourishes my spirit and you energize my soul.
But before the warm summer days get too far behind us, I do have one more important family trip on my agenda. Next month, I will be meeting my sister (from Colorado) in Waco, Texas, where we will spend time praying and tending to our parents’ graves. While each of us travel to Waco as often as possible to spend time at our parents’ graves, this will be the first time we’ve been there together except for their respective funerals. While this will likely be a somber, reflective and prayerful time, we might slip in a bit of fun. I won’t lie. We’ll likely end up at Magnolia in the hopes of catching a glimpse and maybe an autograph of Chip and Joanna Gaines. We’re both huge fans of Fixer Upper!
Although I won’t be preaching in the parish in September because of our Waco trip, I will continue to hold you all in my thoughts and prayers. May God continue to bless all of you and I hope you enjoy the remainder of our warm summer days!
