Today I find myself wondering, in light of the Thanksgiving holiday, just what it is that I shall thank God for and I remember so many people who are struggling to identify any blessing in their life. So much tragedy is present in our world, so many people in pain, so many have lost so much, and I wonder:
For What Will I Thank You O Lord?
My heart is filled with love as I recall all the blessings in my life, and I wonder how it is that I am so blessed while others seem to suffer so.
Will the time come Lord when all your people will be fed?
Will the time come when the division between the rich and the poor will be no more?
When will the homeless find shelter?
When will the prejudice against your children cease?
When will those who believe no one cares be blessed by the compassion of another?
What will it take Lord for all your people to reach out and love?
Perhaps when we witness famine and homelessness.
Perhaps when we witness war and hate crimes and senseless violence.
Perhaps when the most vulnerable among us are abused.
Will it be then Lord?
Will we act then?
So be it. The time is now! The time to love and care and reach out; the time to take to heart the message of Jesus:
“Whatsoever you do to the least of my brethren; that you do unto me.”
We have witnessed the brokenness of your people, Lord.
We have witnessed senseless killing and children starving.
We have seen the effect of physical, social and emotional abuse.
Be with us Lord. Enlighten our hearts that we might learn how to respond in love.
Send your Spirit to be with us as we struggle to understand our call to be compassionate. Remove the fear in us and replace it with the courage and strength to make a difference.
For this I pray O Lord; open my heart and grant me a true understanding of what it means to love unconditionally, without judgement.
For this I will thank you O Lord; for the love you have shown me, for the gift of my life and my family and for my faith in you and the understanding that all things are possible with God.
May God grant us all a grateful heart!
He Would Love First!
