NOTES FROM DEACON YANISH
It was one of those hot early summer days when the two men came to resurface or sealcoat our driveway. It’s just a short driveway, but it was still a very hot day and the sun was beating down mightily. Not to mention the large tank of hot liquid tar that they put down and spread out over the already scorching asphalt. And not to mention that they had to first blast the weeds out of the cracks and fill and seal them. And not to mention that they had just come from another driveway job and had another one to do when ours was finished.
It was high noon; the hottest part of the day and I don’t think their truck had working air-conditioning. In short, these guys were a little more than warm and they looked it. So, about half way through the job, Laurel grabbed a couple of bottles of cold water from the fridge and ran it out to them, being careful not to step in the fresh tar. They quickly accepted the bottles and glugged them down but not before saying a profound “Thank you!” They really seemed to appreciate the gesture. They smiled. And by the way, they did a great job on the driveway. In our gospel this weekend, Jesus says something like this: “……whoever gives only a drink of cold water to one of these…….will surely have his (or her) reward.” In the gospel Jesus is speaking to the Apostles and speaking about receiving and spreading the Word to and through other disciples and followers. He is basically saying that whoever helps those who proclaim the Word; in this case prophets and “little disciples” will be blessed for their efforts and kindness.
Pay it forward, so to speak.
We can all do that, can’t we?
This week we celebrate Independence Day. Let’s also celebrate the blessing of being very Dependent on God for everything. EVERYTHING!
