Today is PENTECOST and we officially end the Easter Season in the catholic Church as we celebrate and commemorate the arrival of the Advocate, the one Jesus promised before his Ascension into heaven – the HOLY SPIRIT.
You might say that what we celebrate today is the birth of the Catholic Church as the Apostles were blessed with the Holy Spirit, given all they needed to go forth and take the Good News of the Risen Jesus to the world. Upon receiving the Holy Spirit the Apostles began a journey of faith that we share in today and one that will continue long after we are gone from this earth. The coming of the Holy Spirit also marks for the Catholic Church its apostolic nature, as we can trace our Church in an unbroken succession back to the Apostles, themselves; to the very day of PENTECOST. In this coming of the Holy Spirit we as a People of God are promised a companion of the greatest kind – we are given the companionship, relationship and the love and mercy of God to equip us with all that we need to take the Good News of the Risen Jesus to the world. So how are you doing with that? When and how do you participate in the task of sharing the Good News?
Don’t be too hard on yourself for you are indeed contributing to the work of the Church as you attend Mass, pray daily, put others first, reach out and help the poor, receive the sacraments, ask for God’s mercy and forgiveness, forgive others and pray in thanksgiving for all of God’s blessings. As you live your life each and every day whether at work, in a school setting or within your circle of family and friends, you can choose to live your life in such a way that people see Jesus in you. They see love and kindness, a willingness to reach out and help and they witness your love for God as you gather with your community of faith to praise and honor Him. And all the while, you are accompanied by the Holy Spirit, God with you! Let us together give thanks for this incredible gift that enriches our lives and guides us on a path to eternity with God.
In and with the Holy Spirit,
