Here we are in the second week of Advent. Most of our thoughts are probably focused on getting ready for the celebration of Christmas Eve or Day. And there certainly is much that needs to be done to be sure everything is ready for that event. Much time and energy is put into it. Everyone one wants to be prepared and ready.
We proclaim this Advent season to be about getting ready for Christmas. And it is. But it is so much more. Itis a time for us to examine how we experience Christ’s presence today. For meeting Him today enables us to celebrate more joyfully that event thatmarks His birth on Christmas. Likewise, by meeting Christ today we prepare ourselves for that day when we are called home by God.
In the end, our Advent season is about all three:
· meeting Christ today,
· remembering his birth as a human being, and
· preparing for his return in glory.
One of the ways in which we meet Christ is through the sacraments. This week, we have the opportunity to meet Christ in the Sacrament of Reconciliation. It might seem strange but we meet Christ in the darker side of our life; in those areas where we are not at our best; in those moments when we have refused to share His love with others. We meet Christ in our sins. And what an encounter that is. Naming that dark side for ourselves in Christ’s presence, we hear his unbelievable love for us even there. To that side of our lives, Christ brings his mercy, his compassion and his healing love. What a gift he gives. I invite you to come and celebrate this Sacrament with us this Tuesday at 6:30 pm. Again, there will be a number of priests here to help you encounter Christ and be lifted up by his love for you. Don’t miss it!
