What happened to the summer? If you’re like me, it seems like we were just planting our annuals in the garden, preparing for Spring Break, and looking forward to the long Memorial Day weekend. Then whoosh! Suddenly we’re preparing for back-to-school, Labor Day weekend, and our church’s festival.
I always enter our church festival weekend with mixed emotions. I’m always a little saddened because the festival marks (at least in my mind) that we are rapidly reaching the end of the summer. But on the other hand, I am always excited by the weekend because it is an opportunity for the parish as well as the broader community to come together to enjoy a weekend of fun and celebration. My family and I have lived in Sartell and belonged to St. Francis Xavier for a mere 15 years, which means that we’ve only enjoyed the festival for that many years.
Shortly after joining the parish, my wife, Donna, and I had the opportunity to serve as chairpersons on the festival committee for three years. It was an extremely fulfilling opportunity to participate in parish life and also helped us realize all the hard work that the various volunteers put into it to make it a success. If you’ve never served on the festival committee, I highly recommend participating. You will enjoy it!
Over the years, there has been subtle changes in the festival. Back in our day, it was simply referred to as the Fall Festival. For the past few years it has been called Franny Fest with a really cool graphic to help identify the event. Events have shifted over time from being primarily on Sunday to now stretching across three days beginning with a Teen Event on Friday evening. No matter the name or the format, one thing remains the same: It is FUN!
Weather is the one “wild card” that we can never seem to control. Some years it is very hot. Some years it is very rainy. There have even been years that strong storms have threatened the festival. Regardless of the weather, we always seem to have a wonderful gathering. Those various weather challenges only seem to add to the interesting stories about previous years. Let us pray together for a beautiful weather weekend so that we can once again join together in celebration.
I hope you are planning to take time out of your weekend to enjoy Franny Fest. There will be something for everyone over the course of the weekend. The food is always delicious. Beverages are always cold. The Live Music is always wonderful. Bingo is always exciting (even though I never win!). The Silent Auction always seems to have more “must haves” than I could possibly win.
I look forward to seeing you at Franny Fest. If you’re looking for me, I’ll be the guy not yelling “BINGO!”
He Would Love First!
