As I write this column I have just returned from the Lemonade & Laughter event held here in the Gathering Place of our church. It was a rather delightful afternoon gathering of mostly senior citizens of our community.
The entertainment shared over cookies and lemonade was the music and the musings of local talent, Ted Manderfeld. It was very nice.
As Memorial Day approaches, I was particularly struck by his rendition of the Lee Greenwood song: “God Bless The USA (or “I’m Proud To Be An American”). Listening to the lyrics and singing along I felt my eyes start to moisten and a patriotic mood came over me and much of the crowd that had gathered as well. We realized at that moment that despite all of the political hoopla, despite all of the negative news in our world, despite hunger and poverty, despite all the things that are wrong…..something is right; we are still so very blessed to live in a place where we can be free to worship our loving God and live in relative peace. We can still stand up and be proud to be an American. And even more so we can acknowledge the freedom and blessings of being followers of Christ!
Peace, Deacon Steve
