Today we celebrate Jesus’ Ascension into heaven. This is important because it marks the completion of his earthly mission. He came to bring us all back to right relationship with God. Throughout his life he showed us God’s deep love for us. He reminded us of God’s plan for the world as he taught, healed, ate with people, and listened to the stories of their lives. His life brought him to the cross as the ultimate sign of God’s love. Jesus had given everything he was and everything he possessed to the Father out of sheer love. He taught by example and prepared his disciples of the first century, and us today to continue his mission. Today we remember that the Ascension calls each of us to love deeply and to enter into one another’s lives.
Last weekend we celebrated our granddaughter’s 6th birthday. As I sat at the table with Alivia where she put together her new fairy garden I found myself looking around the table. Alivia had two grandmas, three great grandmas, an aunt, her mother, and a cousin with her (not to leave out the grandpas and great grandpa!). I couldn't help but think about how blessed our grandchildren are to be surrounded by so many generations of love. Ascension and Mother’s Day fall on the same day today I
am grateful for the many wisdom women with which God has blessed me. They have and continue to prepare me to live as a disciple of Christ. Their examples of love, forgiveness, discipline, and support are gifts on which I draw often. May the generations of love that surround each of us continue to draw us closer to the heart of God!
Happy Mother’s Day to all.
