“Lord every nation on earth will adore you!” King Herod instructed the three wise men to “go and search diligently for the child.” As we know Herod’s motive was one driven by fear; a threat to his power. He wanted to know exactly where this new “King” was located so that he might do away with the encroachment of a rival to his own kingship.
But when we read those words “Go and search diligently….” We might find a hidden message for ourselves in this new year of our Lord 2016. For we too are called, each one of us, by name to make a thoughtful and diligent search for Jesus.
The thing is we really don’t have to search very hard to locate Him. He’s right here. Immanuel: God with us. Yes, He is here. Very close and yet we often overlook His presence among us. We fail to see Him in our neighbor, in those who need us, in those who want us to pay attention to them.
Sometimes we do not even have to leave our homes to meet up with Him and minister to Him.
Sometimes He manifests Himself to us in a family member who is hurting and we may not even be aware of his or her pain.
Sometimes we need to manifest ourselves to others. That may be one of the hardest things we do. We don’t like to show our weaknesses and shortcomings to others but we may just need to open up to someone we have hurt or may have been hurt by.
This is our call to mercy and forgiveness.
This is our call to live that Gospel of Generosity.
And now is the time.
Peace and Mercy in this New Year,
