“Full of New Wine”
May 21, 2015
It must have been quite a sight; quite an experience, that first apostolic Pentecost.
The Holy Spirit had just filled the apostles with a new and avid confidence in Jesus and in themselves. Suddenly their mission was clear.
They knew what they must do.
They knew it would be a great challenge.
They knew that they would be rejected by many.
But they also knew positively that the Spirit of God would be with them. So they boldly went where no man had been before proclaiming the Good News!
Their critics were already starting to put them down. The followers of Jesus were accused of being drunk; as being “full of new wine.”
Those who received the Holy Spirit that day were speaking in different tongues, different languages. The onlookers probably said things like: “They must be crazy!” or “They have all gone insane” “They are nuts!”
What a day! What an experience! And what a response the apostles received that day!
First they are elated in the glorious moment and then the feeling of rejection came from their critics. It must have been pretty frustrating. Yet these ordinary fishermen were strengthened to endure it and bravely began to lead people to Christ from that day on.
It was a big day for the apostles, the biggest day of their lives. They felt the Holy Spirit within their hearts and souls and their bodies.
We can do that too.
Let us pray always: Come, Holy Spirit fill the hearts of your faithful and kindle in them the fire of your love.
