Finally!!! I don’t think anyone can deny that spring has sprung. Admittedly, we might still see a few cold days and maybe even some of those white flakes before we settle into long summer nights, but spring is definitely here. I enjoy living in a climate that experiences all four seasons, but spring has always been my favorite season.
As I collect my thoughts together for this week’s bulletin, I’m gazing out my office window and I can see buds on the trees, green blades of grass among the sea of brown, and birds enjoying seed from the birdfeeders. This is the time of year when life is renewed again. Birds that had flown south for the winter are making their way north.
Grass, trees and other plants that have been dormant for the past several months are once again finding new life. It’s impossible for me to think about the new life of spring without thinking about Jesus’ resurrection. And vice versa. I can’t think about Jesus’ resurrection without thinking about the renewal of all life. For so many reasons, I think this is the most beautiful time of year.
As we look around the church during the Easter season, our eyes are drawn to the beautiful flowers in the sanctuary that surround the ambo and our bowl of Holy Water near the altar. The cross in our Gathering Place, surrounded by flowers, is a symbol of life. Moreover, it is a symbol of the resurrection. Jesus Christ is RISEN! ALLELUIA! The scripture readings in the weeks following Easter Sunday tell us stories of how the disciples, the Jews, the Greeks, and all of the inhabitants of the area were learning about Jesus’ resurrection. His rising from the dead is an outward sign of God’s mercy and love for all of us. He died for our salvation. He died for the forgiveness of our sins. He died so you and I have the opportunity for everlasting life in the Kingdom of Heaven. I imagine that every day in Heaven is like a beautiful spring day. After death there will constantly be new life. Those who follow God’s Word will experience everlasting life in His Kingdom.
Enjoy these beautiful spring days. We are blessed to live in a community that is experiencing these wonderful days. We are also blessed to worship in a church community that is experiencing the loving grace of God’s Easter gift to each one of us.
I wish all of you an outstanding spring and a blessed Easter season!
