“Give to Caesar what is Caesar’s, give to God what is God’s.” Matthew 22.21
October 19, 2014
Words of Scripture, familiar to many, that speak to usof two kingdoms; the earthly kingdom and the divine Kingdom. Jesus is simple and direct as he addresses the people who hope to trick him and ridicule him inthe presence of others. He stands firm teaching that we are to giveto this world what belongs to this world, AND give to God what is God’s. Certainly we participate in society and the world in which we live and there are laws and rules that belong to man, not from God.
However, it is through Jesus Christ that we learn that the Kingdom of God is at hand; it is here now and today.
So what is it that belongs to God? We know the answer:
Everything - including Caesar! We are here in the world, on this earth, by God’s design; our challenge is to live our lives guided by God’s values and ways so that we might attain the divine Kingdom. Take time this week to assess where you are at in this earthly Kingdom of God. How do you conduct yourself as a member of society? Do others witness in you your knowledge of Jesus Christ?
By your baptism and the presence of the Holy Spirit you are given all you need. Depend on His help; our faith in Jesus Christ assures us that it will be provided.
Just last week I met with a group of people who are interested in supporting those among us who are in the military. St. Francis Xavier Military Advocates agreed that what we first need before offering support is to learn who it is we will serve. So in an effort to gather names we ask the help of all parishioners.
Are you a veteran? Have you actively served in wartime? Have you served in any branch of the U.S. Military? Army ~ Navy ~ Air Force ~ Marines ~ National Guard ~ Coast Guard ~ Merchant Marines ~ Or the Reserve of any branch. Do you know of anyone from our parish who is a veteran or actively serving?
Do you have a family member that is in the military, even if not a parishioner? Do you know of anyone who is now deployed?
Responding with information regarding military service does not mean you are expected to be part of the Military Advocates; rather, it is a way to put names and faces on our prayers and supportive activities. For the next few weeks, in the Gathering Place, near the Parish Office there will be a table near a U.S. flag that will have cards to be filled out by all military, both veterans and
those actively serving. Please help if you can! Then we invite all to watch for information regarding activities, gatherings, etc. that the Military Advocates will offer. The group is currently working on a Veteran’s Day program for the students here at St. Francis Xavier. They intend to assist with the MN Nice
organization who continues to provide care packages to those who are now deployed or serving in foreign countries. There is also an interest in gathering vets to get to know one another and share their story of service to our country.
With grateful hearts to all who offer their time and talent to defend and protect our country, we pray for your safety and ask the Lord our God to protect you as you work for peace in our world.
