Where is the Love?
August 10, 2019
If we ask that question in regard to the world, might we struggle a bit trying to identify just where love is to be found? All one has to do is listen to the unending stream of news to evoke in us a prayer to God to save us from evil that seems so prevalent in our world today.
Is love found in the world leaders who affect the future of world peace by their words and actions?
Is the love found in those leaders putting their people before themselves in true servanthood?
Is the love found in how each region of the world provides for the poor among them?
Is the love found in good faith efforts to cease war and bring peace among nations?
If we ask the same question about our own country, might we also struggle to identify love?
Is love evident in our elected officials and their desire to serve others?
Is love found in the attitudes of people as they attempt to work together for the common good?
Is love found in the hearts and the minds of people who profess that we live in the greatest country on earth while it is inundated by violence and death?
Is love found in those who choose not to welcome the stranger or care for the poor?
Is love found in the use of violence as a tool to draw attention to a particular point of view?
And then, if we take this question to our own heart, where is the love? Do our words, our attitudes, our actions reflect what we as Christians know to be love?
Is love found in how I treat others at home, at work, and even those I hear about on the news?
Is love found in my ability to listen without judgement to those who are crying for help?
Is love reflected in my respect for others, for authority, for the laws of my country?
Is love found in how I share what I have been gifted in this life – my time, my talent, my treasure?
Is love found in my ability to control my words and actions when I disagree with others?
Is love what guides me as I make known the importance of respecting all life?
Is love found in how I speak of God’s people?
God is love. We know that because we know God. Let us pray that we might become ever more aware of our responsibility to reflect and share God’s love as we live our call to love and serve one another.
