“Peace I Leave With You, My Peace I Give to You”
May 25, 2019
The world in which we live is in many ways a whirl wind of activity and responsibility; family, work, parish and community. Our Lord, Jesus
Christ is fully aware of all the distractions in our lives that can lead us to experience anxiety, worry, doubt, fear and a need to stay in motion, running from one thing to the next. Yet what Jesus wants most for us is Peace.
The very first words spoken by Jesus to his Apostles after his resurrection from the dead were, “Peace be with you.” The peace Jesus offers to us all in that greeting is not about the busyness of life or the cessation of wars, rather it is about the gift of inner peace that can only come from knowing that God loves you and desires the best for you. It is a peace that comes from knowing the story of our salvation through Jesus; that we are truly saved, forgiven and can look forward to eternity with God – that is the promise of the Father shared by Jesus – that he will come and take each of us to himself, that we might be one with the Father like Jesus is one with the Father.
No greater gift could we be given. We must, as Easter people who know Jesus Christ and our story of salvation, make every attempt to acknowledge the peace that Jesus offers. He does not desire that we struggle, rather that we trust; trust that what he has shared with us is truth and that we indeed are forgiven, saved, blessed and can be at peace. As we prepare to celebrate the Ascension of Jesus into heaven, let us make effort to find the peace that is ours in him, knowing also his promise of the Holy Spirit with us for all time. When we accept this gift from our loving and creative God, we will have true peace. Then all chaos in life is more manageable. We can go about this life, filled with the love of God, taking care of ourselves amidst the chaos and in doing so more effectively share the love of Jesus Christ with others.
Let the words Jesus spoke be a light for our world:
“Peace I leave with you, my peace I give you.” Open your hearts and receive the gift of true peace from the Prince of Peace.
