“Behold, the Lamb of God”
January 13, 2018
During our staff meeting on Tuesday we used today’s gospel for prayer and reflection. John the Baptist says to two of his disciples “Behold, the Lamb of God” as they see Jesus.
Andrew and John were his followers but trusted John when he pointed them towards Jesus. They immediately to ask Jesus where he was staying. Isn’t that an odd first question to a stranger? To our ears today, we hear them asking whether he was staying in someone’s home or perhaps with a friend or relative. But Scripture scholars tell us they were most likely asking him what rooted him or what was the source of his being. Jesus’s response, “Come and you will see” is an invitation to join him on an inward journey. They joined him and their lives were changed forever.
Today’s gospel is an invitation for us to continue that journey to discover the source of Jesus’ being and indeed our own, as disciples today. Unfortunately, we cannot sit with Jesus in the flesh today, experience his interactions with people, and have discussions with him as could Andrew, Peter, and John. Perhaps some questions can help us on this journey to discover how the source of our being intertwines with Jesus.
· Who do you follow?
· Who do you want to be like?
· Name three things someone has said to you that has made a difference in your life.
· What might persuade you to follow Jesus more fervently?
