“I am the Bread of Life”
John 6.35
Wow! Can it be August already? For me that means returning to my office after being gone for a month as I have an 11-month work agreement with the parish. And though I would enjoy even more time off, there is a longing within me to return to ministry with the people of St. Francis Xavier. So I will begin again this week with a heart grateful for the opportunity to serve you. Our hunger too, is nourished by becoming one with Jesus in the Eucharist. Jesus tells us, “I am the bread of life, whoever comes to me will never hunger, whoever believes in me with never thirst.” John 6.35 Now we need to take in those words, let them become part of who we are; people who long and hunger for God. We must trust that all we need we will find in God.
It seems that we are a restless people, seeking always to fill our lives with that which will make us happy. We aspire to achieve monetary wealth, the house and all of its amenities, the cars we love to drive, the vacations we long for, the toys and activities that will bring us rest and relaxation. And yet, at times, when we quiet ourselves, we wonder what it is all for, and we may ask ourselves if this is really what life is all about. Something within calls us to this discernment. It is our connection to our Creator God. It is our longing and hunger to be one with HIM!
It was St. Augustine who prayed: “You have made us for yourself O Lord, and our heart is restless until it rests in you.” Let us take time this week to think about, to pray about what we long for in life. What truly sustains us and for what do we most hunger? And how are we fed?
Blessings,
Deb Rudolph
