Language Arts Curriculum

In third grade we cover language arts from five specific areas: phonics, spelling, reading, writing, and English.  This does not include the Accelerated Reader (AR) program students are expected to challenge themselves in.  The following outcomes are the skills in which we grade students.


Word Attack Skills

 Uses short/long vowel patterns in words.
 
Reads/writes words with consonant blends/digraphs.
 
Identifies/constructs contraction words. 
 Identifies/uses common word endings/suffixes. 

 Read/writes words with vowel digraphs/diphthongs.

  Divides words into syllables.

 Identifies/uses common prefixes. 
 Supplies a synonym for a word. 
 Supplies an antonym for a word. 
 Supplies a homonym/homophone for a word. 
 Alphabetizes word to the third letter. 
 Identifies/uses new vocabulary. 

Comprehension Skills

 Identifies cause and effect. 
 Identifies word meaning through context clues. 
 Answers literal questions about a selection. 
 Follows written/verbal directions. 
 Predicts logical outcomes. 
 Listens for main ideas/details in an oral presentation. 
 Sequences events through notes, timelines, and charts. 
 Uses the table of contents/glossary.

Grammar/Writing Skills

Capitalizes proper nouns. 

Identifies three types of sentences: statement, question, and exclamation. 

Uses correct capitalization/punctuation in writing. 
 Identifies parts of speech (nouns, verbs, adjectives, and adverbs).
