Grade 1 - Mrs. Cooley

I believe that all students are special, smart, and valuable people.  When we respect ourselves, we also help respect others.  Our words and actions need to be kind and honest.  We should always expect the best in all we do so that we can truly be proud of being the best person that God created us to be.

Dear Parents,

We have some exciting things coming up that we are looking forward to.  First, we are going to a play at St. John's University. Then we have Catholic Schools Week which is always filled with many fun activities. Next, the first graders will have the readings at Mass on February 10th. Then we will have the 100th day of school! Finally on Valentine's Day, we will be going ice skating.

Besides all the fun things coming up, my first graders are pen pals. Our pen pals are the first grade students of Mrs. Fritz's class from Oak Ridge Elementary.  We have sent letters back and forth a couple of times now.  It has been fun to see the excitement when the letters arrive!

Curriculum Update:

In Language Arts, we will continue working on long vowel sounds, blends, new phonograms, and other word attack strategies.  We will continue to do lots of reading to improve our fluency and comprehension skills.

In Math, we will be working on counting forward/backward from any number on the 100 chart and practice skip-counting by 2, 5 and 10.

In Religion , we will discuss the gifts of the Holy Spirit and how they can help us.  Then we will begin practicing for our Mass.

We will be finishing our dinosaur unit in Science.  Dental Health is next.

In Social Studies, we have been learning about the directions on a map/globe.  We will begin discussing our resources and ways to reduce, reuse, and/or recycle.

A special thank you for choosing Catholic education for your child.  It is a gift for a life time.

Peace and Love,
Mrs. Cooley
