Focus of Study (by grade level)

Faith Formation for Grades One through Ten

Classes are held on Monday evenings for grades 1-3 and grades 4-5 alternately and on Wednesday evenings for grades 6 & 7 and 8 & 9 alternately.  Grade 10 meets every other week, also on Wednesday night.  All classes are held in St. Francis Xavier Catholic School.  Please see schedules for dates and times.

The Basic Focus of study is as follows:

Grade  One

Students are introduced to the basic teachings of the Catholic Church about the Blessed Trinity-the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

Grade Two

Students are introduced to the Sacraments of Reconciliation and Eucharist.  During this year they, together with their families prepare for the celebration of these two sacraments.  See First Sacraments for more information.

Grade Three

Students begin to explore what makes the Catholic Church special and what it means to be members of the Church community.

Grade Four

Students learn the foundations of moral decision-making by studying the Ten Commandments and Beatitudes.

Grade Five

Students explore how God continues to reveal God's self through sacramentals and the Sacraments, especially through the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus.

Grade Six

During this year, our focus is on the Old Testament as the beginning of our own Christian story.  By looking at God's relationship with Adam and Eve, the Patriarchs, and the Israelite people through time we come to see Jesus as the fulfillment of God's plan for salvation.

Grade Seven

The students explore the person of Jesus in the New Testament.  During this year students come to understand Jesus as the full revelation of God through his actions and words and continued presence in the Sacraments.

Grade Eight

By studying Church History in broad sweeps of time, students gain a sense of the Holy Spirit guiding the Church throughout tie as we encounter growth and human struggles.

Grade Nine

Making moral decisions is a part of life.  During this course of study we seek to know more about God's call to lead good Christian lives.  Students come to know the teachings of the Church that guide our lives as well as the tools the Catholic Church gives us to fulfill this call to discipleship.  Topics such as reverence and respect for all , recognition that we are all created in the image of God and are meant to love and to be loved, as well as Catholic Social Teachings are explored.

Grade Ten

Young people in 10th grade are invited to prepare for the celebration of the Sacrament of Confirmation.   During this year, they review basic fundamentals of our faith and reflect on their commitment to live as a member of the Catholic Church.  Through prayer, service, and study, they gain a broader perspective of parish life and what it means to be a disciple of Christ.  See Confirmation for more details.
